Michele Simon, California based author of "Appetite for Profit: How the Food Industry Undermines Our Health and How to Fight Back", will be speaking at a free public forum about the politics of food. What's the biggest problem right now in the food industry right now?
The biggest problem the industry faces is the growing opposition to marketing junk food to children. If you are asking the biggest problem with food, it’s the entire processed food paradigm.

What's one step consumers can do to improve the situation?
For those who can afford it and have access, to eat a mostly plant-based, whole foods diet, No processed foods! And preferably locally-sourced, and when possible, organic. After that, we must make policy change to make this way of eating accessible to all. This problem cannot be solved based on consumer behavior alone!

How have you changed your eating habits over the past few years?
See above. I eat all plant-based, no dead animals or animal products. It’s best for my health, that of the planet, and obviously the animals. But this is not enough. I have also shifted to mostly whole foods, and all of my produce is sourced locally.

Who has been the most motivational and supportive person for you in your cause?
Marion Nestle, who was writing about the politics of food before it became popular. She has paved the way for my work, and is very supportive. I am very grateful for her inspiration and support.

What's the most touching compliment you received for your book "Appetite for Profit"?
That Marion Nestle has adopted my book as required reading for her public health nutrition students at NYU. And she called it “Brilliant”!
