Having seen Patti Lupone in Sweeney Todd in Broadway and heard Angela Lansbury on CD before seeing Judy Kaye at the Princess of Wales theatre, I always look for that "x" factor that would differentiate one actor from another. The Toronto Mrs. Lovett (Judy) does a good rendition of Worst Pies in London, Poor Thing, and Wait. David Garry plays Sweeney Todd and his voice emanates a haunting expression that will excite the audience.
The actor-musicians are empowered to own the tale of Sweeney Todd using their instruments as narrative tools. It reminds me of Cabaret and how the musicians not only show their multiple talents but also provides a background that is seamless rather than divided between actor/singers and orchestra in a pit.
